Mellow Ventures Team Enters Pikes Peak Challenge
Mellow Ventures supports the Pike's Peak Challenge, a unique fundraising event held annually each September where registered participants raise money for the Brain Injury Association of Colorado by hiking 13 miles and 7,400 vertical feet to crest the summit of 14,110-foot high Pikes Peak. Pikes Peak Challenge
The 2009 24th Annual Pikes Peak Challenge was held on September 12, 2009 and Mellow Ventures fielded a team to compete in the Challenge. The Mellow Ventures team raised more than twice the amount from our previous entry in 2007 thanks to the generosity of team sponsors. Team Mellow Ventures departed the trail head just after 5am, reaching Barr Camp (6.5 miles) around 9am. Temperatures started off around 40 degrees at the trailhead and dropped below 30 degrees at the summit. Reports of snow on the peak and lightening threatened to turn hikers around not departing Barr Camp by 10am. Our team headed out of Barr Camp about 9:50am after refilling water, and encountered snow for the last mile and summited the peak about 3pm (2 1/2 hours better than in 2007) where we had hot soup and waited for vans to take us for the hour-long ride down the back of Pikes Peak.
